Research summary
If people with Parkinson’s don’t get their medication on time it can seriously impact their health. Unfortunately, people with Parkinson’s often miss out on their vital medication while staying in hospital. Not only does this have hugely adverse effects on people’s health, it also creates a need for longer hospital stays.
While we know there are immediate adverse health outcomes due to missed or delayed medication doses, we do not yet know what the long term consequences of this are. We also do not have any understanding of how missed or delayed medication interacts with later recovery. It is important that we capture the impact of these events so that we can begin to develop interventions that overcome these issues.
To understand the impact of medication mismanagement, health status will be collected prior to and following planned hospital visits via online or paper questionnaires. A shorter version of these will be repeated at monthly intervals up to 6-months following the hospital stay.
During the hospital stay, participants and their visiting family members will keep a diary of their medication schedule, noting any missed or delayed doses, and the impact of this. For emergency hospital visits, this data will be collected from as soon as possible during or after a hospital stay.
