Research summary
Identical (monochorionic) twins are at risk of developing a variety of serious complications during pregnancy because they share the same placenta. Sadly some of these complications can result in the death of the fetus(es). At present we cannot predict which twins which develop these complications, and which twins will remain healthy. Nor can we predict the severity of the complications either. Consequently we monitor all monochorionic twins closely. The aim of our study is to create a model which will enable doctors to predict which twins will develop complications, based on the ultrasound scan and blood tests from the first trimester.
We will recruit women pregnant with monochorionic twins and booking at the centres involved. With consent, we will perform some extra tests on the maternal blood samples all pregnant women have taken in the first trimester, and second trimester, and we will collect data on their routine first trimester ultrasound scan, basic demographic data, and their pregnancy outcomes. If women develop complications during their pregnancy, we will take extra blood samples to assess disease severity and progression, and if laser treatment is required, an extra sample of amniotic fluid will be taken prior to and following the procedure, as is routine care.
We will recruit over 2 years and when we have collected all the data, we will create an advanced statistical model whereby doctors can input all the measurements from the blood test and ultrasound scan in order to predict whether the woman is high risk or low risk.REC name
