Research summary
Identical (monochorionic) twins are at risk of developing a variety of serious complications during pregnancy because they share the same placenta. Sadly some of these complications can result in the death of the fetus(es). At present we cannot predict which twins which develop these complications, and which twins will remain healthy. Consequently we monitor all monochorionic twins closely. The aim of our study is to create a model which will enable doctors to predict which twins will develop complications, based on the ultrasound scan and blood tests from the first trimester.
We will use blood samples collected by microbiology as part of routine booking which are stored by the labs for 2 years. The substances which will be measured in the blood samples will be decided from the results of a systematic review and meta-analysis, and based on the previous work by Dr Caroline Fox (Fox et al 2009). Outcome data will be collected, including their routine first trimester ultrasound scan, basic demographic data, and their pregnancy outcomes.
The relationship between the maternal serum markers and pregnancy outcome will then be assessed.REC name
