Research summary
Abdominoperineal resection (APR) is a type of operation for rectal cancer. This treatment includes removal of the anus and the lowest part of the large bowel, called the rectum. During this procedure, the remaining part of the large bowel is permanently redirected to the abdominal surface, as a stoma. Patients who have had this type of surgery may experience wound healing problems and changes to their quality of life and functional outcomes. Depending on the width of the resection, the pelvis is sometimes filled by the omentum (a layer of fatty tissue that covers the intestine) to improve the wound healing. However it is still unclear whether this pelvic filling in large resections is of benefit.
This is the reason why we want to carry out this study to gain a better understanding of any benefits to using the omentum and how to further improve rectal cancer surgery. We are intending to involve a total of 119 patients, who have undergone an abdominoperineal resection for rectal cancer in the past, in this study.REC name
