Research summary
Survival rates in cancer continue to improve, with over 2 million adult cancer survivors in the UK, projected to increase to 4 million by 2030. Around 25% of these survivors require treatment for clinical levels of emotional distress. Reviews indicate that current psychological and pharmacological approaches achieve only modest treatment effects. Reflecting this limited effectiveness, and patients’ preference for psychological over pharmacological interventions is the need to develop more effective and practically feasible psychological interventions for depression and anxiety in cancer survivors. We will carry out a study that tests if metacognitive therapy can reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression in cancer survivors. We will also examine if there are any obstacles that may make it difficult to give MCT to cancer survivors in routine clinical services.
