  • Research summary

As Special Care Dentists we frequently see and treat patients with varying degrees of mental illness. Research has shown that patients with mental illness have higher levels of dental disease and often do not access dental services until they have symptoms. They then present with acute dental pain or swelling, requiring extensive courses of treatment. Many of these individuals are already receiving treatment from the community psychiatry team therefore early identification of patients with mental illness presenting with dental disease may avoid acute presentation to our service and thus, improve their oral health related quality of life.
The research will be funded by a grant that was awarded by BSDH (British Society of Disabilty and Oral Health).
    The Objectives will be to:
    1. To define what Oral Health means to the cohort
    2. Determine the Oral Health Related Quality of Life (OHQoL) of patients receiving community based psychiatric care using the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP)
The study will explore the oral health related quality of life experience of patients receiving community based psychiatric care. Participants will be identified and recruited by the researchers at community-based out-patient psychiatric clinics in Derbyshire on a voluntary basis.
A qualitative interview will be conducted, starting with a general narrative questions to give participant an opportunity to talk about their experience of oral health. Depending on their response the questions will then be tailored to key themes raised using the Oral Health Impact Profile. The interview will last up to 45 minutes. The interviews will be transcribed and key themes identified. The results will be shared with the psychiatry team and the participant population. The results will be used to aid development of a robust care pathway between the psychiatry and special care dental team.
