  • Research summary

Cancer of the oesophagus is the 14th most common cancer in the UK but the 6th most common cause of cancer death. Cancer research UK has identified oesophageal cancer as a cancer of unmet need and a priority for research.
We plan to build on the extensive knowledge of the molecular genomic landscape and infrastructure that has emerged from our research in the OCCAMS study REC No: 10/H0305/1 and use this for clinical benefit through an inclusive UK wide clinical network and deliver stratified clinical trials in oesophageal cancer. The plans and grant application for this is currently in process.

In this study we aim to determine whether tissue collected at a diagnostic endoscopy can be processed and sequenced to generate genomic data within 4 weeks before the start of chemotherapy. We aim to establish a mechanism and framework to recruit patients with suspected oesophageal cancer and obtain blood samples and tissue biopsies to perform molecular profiling. We aim to prove that the results can be used to personalise the patient’s treatment and that the molecular reporting template is suitable as a basis for planning precision medicine trials.
This will allow us to follow up with our plans to conduct a multi-centre UK wide study to deliver personalised treatment for oesophageal cancer patients offering a network portfolio of trials based on their genomic data.
