  • Research summary

This is a feasibility study for a planned larger research project. We are interested in biomarkers of delirium following hip fracture surgery in older people. In our planned bigger study we will need to measure the thickness of layers of the retina (back of the eye) in a non-invasive manner. The optical coherence tomography (OCT) scanner is a method of achieving this. It is similar to an ultrasound but uses light instead of sound and does not make contact with the tissue (in this case eye) being scanned. It is like having an eye scan at the airport. Classically it is a tabletop device but a hand held version has been developed and is used largely in children. We wish to assess the feasibility of using the hand held scanner in older people following hip fracture surgery.
