Research summary
Dementia strategies and guidelines across the United Kingdom place a significant emphasis on improving and innovating the way health and social care services for people living with dementia are delivered (DH 2009; DHSSPS 2011; WG 2011; SG 2013). Early diagnosis and intervention, including enhancing service provision in primary care and the development of multi-disciplinary memory assessment services are key to this agenda (WG 2011; WG 2009; DH 2009).
A deterioration in ability to carry out day to day activities is a defining diagnostic criterion for dementia (NICE 2006). Occupational therapy, as a profession primarily concerned with enabling people to carry out their day to day activities or occupations, has a significant role to play in promoting, maintaining and maximising the independence and wellbeing of people living with early stage dementia (COT 2016; NICE 2006; 2008). However, there is currently a lack of high quality research investigating the effectiveness of early occupational therapy intervention for people living with early stage dementia in Wales (McGrath and O’Callaghan 2014).
In the context of a gap in the evidence base and the current strategic and political emphasis on early intervention, this study aims to collaboratively develop an occupational therapy intervention for people living with early stage dementia in Wales using a participatory action research (PAR) approach. Multiple qualitative and participatory methods will be utilised to generate data. This will include research methods, including semi-structured interviews, and non-research methods, including public consultation and engagement.
