  • Research summary

In our hospital, we perform specialised tests on blood samples from patients who have received a kidney transplant to see if any antibodies have developed against the transplant. We would like to develop a technique to be able to extract antibodies from the kidney transplants themselves, so that we can perform similar tests to detect antibodies. Other studies have shown that the presence of antibodies in the tissue sample may lead to worse outcomes for the kidney, than is the antibodies are only present in blood. Thus, in the long term, we would like to use the method we develop to obtain antibodies from transplant biopsies which we perform when the kidney is not functioning well which may ultimately allow us to better tailor the treatment offered to a patient undergoing rejection. In order to proceed to this stage, we need to develop and validate an assay for obtaining the antibodies from kidney tissue and we propose using samples taken from transplanted kidneys, that are being removed.
