Research summary
This study will observe people with acromegaly, a rare condition caused by too much growth hormone, usually due to a non-cancerous tumour in the pituitary gland. Extra growth hormone makes bones and tissues grow larger over time, leading to symptoms like enlarged hands and feet, changes in facial features, joint pain, headaches, and vision problems. If untreated, acromegaly can cause serious health issues such as diabetes and heart disease.
One treatment is octreotide SC depot, a long-acting medicine that helps reduce growth hormone levels. “SC” means it is given as an injection under the skin, and “depot” means the medicine is slowly released over time, so fewer injections are needed.
The study will include people who are starting octreotide SC depot or who are already using it. It is observational, meaning that the participants’ usual care will not change and no extra visits are required. Everything will follow the participants’ normal treatment plans.
At the first visit (called the Baseline Visit), the study doctor will check that participants meet the study requirements. The study will last up to two years from the day the participants join the study. Doctors will collect information from the regular medical records and enter it into a secure system. Participants will also complete short questionnaires and keep an electronic treatment diary during the study.
About 200 people in the US and Europe will take part in the study, and around 35 clinics will be involved.
