Research summary
Traditionally the severity of osteoarthritis is assessed with x-rays taking into account features such as joint space width and irregularity of the bone ends. However, there are many features of osteoarthritis that are not visible on plain x-rays but well demonstrated on MRI such as changes in the cartilage and the bone marrow. Despite a number of dedicated MRI scoring systems that exist to assess the severity of OA for joints including the hip and knee, no MRI scoring system exists for the ankle joint.
The purpose of this study is to develop an MRI scoring system for osteoarthritis of the ankle joint and test its reliability and validity. This will be a retrospective study testing the new scoring system on existing MRI examinations.
