  • Research summary

Title: A study to investigate the experiences of and impact on those with osteoarthritis of the ankle on pain, physical functioning, mental wellbeing, and quality of life

    Background:
Osteoarthritis (arthritis) of the ankle joint is a painful and disabling condition. Arthritis Research UK (2016) have found that reducing pain in people with arthritis, would have the greatest positive impact on their quality of life. However, there is a lack of research and clinical experience in the treatment of painful ankle arthritis compared to knee and hip arthritis. Therefore, the aim of this study is to explore the experiences of people with ankle arthritis and the impact it has on pain, physical functioning, mental wellbeing, and quality of life.

By gaining an understanding of the experiences of people with ankle arthritis and the impact it has on pain, physical functioning, mental wellbeing, and quality of life will help inform future research into the management of this condition to ensure any future intervention addresses these main concerns and issues.

    Design:
A qualitative design, using in-depth interviews, will be undertaken to explore the aim of this research. People attending the orthopaedic clinic at Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CMFT) of the senior foot and ankle surgeon, who have been diagnosed with arthritis of the ankle will be invited to take part in this study. Fourteen participants will be recruited. Interviews will take place in private, at either CMFT or Manchester Metropolitan University. The interview will last no longer than 60 minutes.
The in-depth semi-structured interviews will explore with participants with ankle arthritis:
    1. Their pain experience
    2. how this impacts on their physical and mental wellbeing
    3. how this impacts on their quality of life

Interview data will be digitally recorded and transcribed verbatim. Data transformation will use thematic analysis as described by Braun and Clarke (2006).
