Research summary
O-MIRIAM will evaluate perioperative iron deficiency and anaemia in the elective caesarean delivery population by describing how common it is, contributing factors to its development, and its associated psychological morbidity.\n\nData will be collected by the study team and perioperative anaesthetists for 150 patients undergoing elective caesarean section at University College London Hospitals. Antenatal and post natal haemoglobin and haematinics will be recorded, as well as iron and blood transfusion therapy, intraoperative blood loss, and questionnaires relating to fatigue and female health.\n\nThe incidence, patient and operative factors contributing to iron deficiency anaemia, and psychological sequelae will be described - this will provide data that will facilitate tailored departmental planning with effects on perioperative blood management, laboratory testing and IV iron transfusion services, with transferability to other UK obstetric centres.\n
