Nystagmus duration after caloric irrigations

  • Research type

    Research Study

  • Full title

Comparison of the duration of nystagmus after caloric irrigation in patients referred for vestibular assessment with respect to slow phase velocity and type of irrigation (warm or cool), and the possible impact on the interstimulus interval between caloric irrigations.

  • Research summary

Patients undergoing routine caloric irrigations in a vestibular (balance function assessment) clinic to test their balance organ function will have their eye movements (nystagmus - a measure of balance organ function) recorded for slightly longer than usual, until their nystagmus has reached a minimal level (defined as less than or equal to 2 degrees/second above their baseline). The data will be analysed to provide normative data and will compare the slow phase velocity measurement to the duration of the response.
