Research summary
Lung infections with nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) have been increasing worldwide. These organisms are widespread in the environment, but for most people they do not cause a problem. For those with damaged lungs, however, they can cause persistent infections and further lung damage, and may even be fatal for some. We have previously found that underweight patients are at increased risk of death from these bugs. There is evidence in tuberculosis (caused by a similar germ) that vitamin and mineral deficiencies may jeopordise recovery. In this study we propose assessing the nutritional status of patients diagnosed with NTM pulmonary infections at presentation and after 6 months’ treatment and linking this with treatment response and outcome. This will show whether we should be giving our patients nutritional support in addition to antibiotics in the future.
