Research summary
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) affects around 10% of the adult population and is associated with an increased risk of heart attack, stroke and end stage kidney disease (ESKD). This study aims to better predict who is most likely to progress to ESKD using previously identified risk factors and novel biomarkers in blood and urine samples, along with kidney biopsy tissue. Resources can then be directed to those most at risk of disease progression, while those at lower risk can be offered less frequent monitoring.
People will be invited to take part from renal clinics in eleven NHS hospitals sites around the UK. Information, blood and urine samples will be collected at an initial visit and again one year later. Follow up of those taking part will be for 15 years via the UK Renal Registry, who will send out an annual questionnaire to participants.People without CKD will be invited to take part as a control group, so that results of those with CKD can be compared to those without CKD.
