Research summary
Around 1 in 3 people will experience a decline in kidney function following heart surgery, this decline is termed acute kidney injury (AKI). In most cases kidney function will return over time, however for a small number of people this can lead to long term kidney problems termed chronic kidney disease (CKD). At present, it is not known why some people get an AKI and why some recover, while others don’t. This study aims to look at how many people suffer an AKI following heart surgery and then to better understand why some people recover while others progress to CKD. The findings can then be used to better predict who is likely to get an AKI to help find better treatments and preventions for these patients.
The study will involve collection of blood and urine samples which will then be analysed through molecular biology methods (termed 'omics) to find new pathways and markers of AKI in cardiac surgery and the subsequent repair or dysfunction of the kidney.
