Research summary
This research study will address the question: What is the unique role of a nurse in intensive rehabilitation of children with acquired brain injury?
There is a lack of definition of the nursing role in paediatric neurological rehabilitation and this can lead to a lack of direction of how nursing as a discipline contributes to the rehabilitation journey of children and lack of awareness of the position of the nurse within the team delivering the programme.
If the nurses role in this context is more greatly understood, then this will lead to a better service delivery to children and their families. This will take into account how parents perceive the role which could identify areas for improvement in the delivery of care
In order to do this,a mixture of methods of research will be explored. A literature search of current data will be completed, analysis of current quantitative data collected at the inpatient setting will take place and perceptions of the nurses role will be explored.Perception of the nurses role will be explored using two methods; Semi structured interviews with 8 parents whose children have accessed the service and questionnaires to be sent to nurses and members of the multidisciplinary team. As the parents will be interviewed after leaving the service, the interviews will be conducted in their home. Questionnaires will be sent to nurses and the multidisciplinary team.
The study should take approximately 6 months from collection of data to analysis of results.
