Research summary
The provision of psychosocial care and support to patients via nurse-led telephone support has been explored in a number of settings and has been shown to be an acceptable and effective way of meeting the needs of cancer patients. In October 2014 the Tenovus Cancer Care Callback Service was launched in Singleton Hospital, Swansea. The Callback Service offers all Chemotherapy Day Unit patients at the South and West Wales Cancer Centre a series of regular calls from a qualified named nurse, based at Tenovus headquarters in Cardiff. The purpose of the current study is to conduct a pilot evaluation of the acceptability and effectiveness of the Callback Service on key health psychological outcomes in order to explore whether this initiative is appropriate, relevant and useful to those accessing it. A series of postal questionnaires will capture data on uptake rates, engagement, psychological distress, support needs and illness perceptions. Additionally, a sample of outgoing telephone calls from the Callback Service will be analysed to explore the nature and content of calls. The data from this evaluation will enable us to explore whether the provision of nurse-led follow-up and support delivered through Tenovus could be a potentially acceptable alternative or addition to traditional nurse-led provision. The study will also provide important data when considering the feasibility of a future fully-powered randomized controlled trial of this or similar nurse-led telephone services.
