  The NHSGGC Biorepository main tissue acquisition activity is based within the Laboratory Medicine Building on the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (QEUH) campus.
  The tissue storage facilities are based on the QEUH campus. All samples stored in this research tissue bank have the patient’s permission for their tissue to be used in research.
  The NHSGGC Pathology Department provides a centralised operational diagnostic service based in the Laboratory Medicine Building on the QEUH campus. The Pathology department diagnostic tissue archives, associated with the service, are also held on this site as well as at other acute hospitals across NHSGGC.
  The Pathology diagnostic archive is considered to be part of the patient’s medical record and the length of time this is stored for is in accordance with the Royal College of Pathologists retention guidelines. The Formalin Paraffin Embedded Blocks (FFPEs) for example must be retained for a minimum of thirty years.
  The diagnostic tissue resource also includes surplus tissue available from the other Diagnostics Laboratory Medicine Laboratories, including, Haematology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Immunology, Virology and Medical Genetics.

• Research programme

  The main aim in establishing a Biorepository is to provide the infrastructure to underpin and streamline the process of research tissue acquisition and disbursement, according to local and national strategic priorities. Core funding of this facility is through the Scottish Government Chief Scientist Office (CSO) under the auspices of the NHS National Research Scotland (NRS). The purpose of the NRS is developing the national research infrastructure to facilitate medical research and innovation and increase our competitiveness within the UK and globally. A key resource in translational and clinical research including delivery of Precision Medicine is a Biorepository network, which facilitates the discovery of disease mechanisms and treatments. The NRS Biorepository network is a key component of the "Precision Medicine Ecosystem for Scotland". A key priority of the Biorepository is to ensure its activity is closely aligned to the research strategies set out by the CSO as well as those of the local and UK research community.
