  • Research summary

NHS Research Scotland (NRS) Diabetes is a Scotland-wide network for supporting diabetes-related research activity in Scotland. It is one of a number of Research Networks, or Specialty Groups, formed through a partnership of NHS Boards and the Chief Scientist Office of the Scottish Government. NRS Diabetes acts as an interface between the diabetes research community, the NHS and patients with diabetes, facilitating the development, set up and completion of research projects across Scotland. The NHS Research Scotland Diabetes Network (NRS Diabetes) Register (Diabetes Register) is a resource comprising the details of patients with diabetes, living in Scotland. Patients who sign up have consented to the use of their electronic diabetes health records (SCI-Diabetes), by NRS Diabetes, to identify them as potentially eligible for diabetes-related research and subsequent contact by a clinical study team member in Scotland. The Diabetes Register was established in 2007 and is integrated with SCI-Diabetes, NHS Scotland’s electronic patient record for diabetes.

Patients can join the Diabetes Register by completing either a paper-based registration document or by email. The Diabetes Register serves as both an opportunity for patients with diabetes to engage with research related to their condition and as a feasibility and recruitment tool for Scottish clinical researchers and Research & Development departments
