Research summary
This study aims to plug the gap in research in the area of Novel Psychoactive Substances (NPS) and secure mental health settings in Scotland, more specifically within high secure care in Scotland. The study will be based at The State Hospital, the only high secure psychiatric facility in Scotland. We plan to look at reported NPS use in patients admitted to The State Hospital before and after the introduction of the Psychoactive Substances Act (2016) to assess whether NPS use in our patient population has changed with the changes in legislation.
Additionally we plan to give some preliminary information on severity of illness in those using NPS by measuring a variety of outcomes in the 12 months after admission eg violent incidents, restraints etc.
The results of the investigation may help the organisation (and other secure mental health settings) think about the impact of patients who have taken NPS and to consider both resource allocation and patient treatment options.REC name
