  • Research summary

The Novel Assessment of Nutrition and Ageing (NANA) was a three-year research project using a computer touch screen to improve methods to collect information on nutrition, physical function, cognitive function (memory and thinking), and mood to identify individuals at risk of under-nourishment, and to help improve treatments.
To date NANA has not focused on collecting data with frail older adults but this is a group who can place exceptional demands on services, including unplanned hospital admissions and delayed discharge due to their complex needs.Following on from previous research, we would like to see whether the NANA tool is suitable for frail older adults to use in their own home.
NANA has been designed to include grip strength which has been identified as one of the five indicators of frailty (Fried et al 2001).
NANA is a touch-screen computer based dietary assessment tool that enables participants to record and photograph the food and drink they are consuming in real time. A pilot study is proposed using a 7 day period of recording dietary intake using the NANA tool followed by a 4 day estimated food diary 4 weeks later. This design reflects a previous validation study of NANA involving healthy older adults living in the UK (Timon et al., 2015). This would enable comparisons to be made from the data collected from the 40 CARE participants with that collected in the NANA validation study to establish whether the tool is appropriate for data collection in the homes of frail older adults.
