Research summary
Many women with early breast cancer are now treated with chemotherapy before surgery. With modern treatments it is possible to kill all of the cancer in the breast, a pathological complete response (pCR) but currently the only way to prove this is to perform an operation to remove the site where the cancer was present with an operation. This study is intended to determine if we can predict a pCR by performing multiple core biopsies with a small biopsy needle immediately before surgery in any patient achieving a good clinical response. If this technique works in a single institution we can then apply this to a larger series in a multicentre feasibility study. We hope to then set up and run a National Phase III study to compare surgery with radiotherapy to surgery alone in women with negative tumour bed biopsies.
