Research summary
Older persons in hospital often require support to drink enough fluids, but it is rare for a formal risk assessment to be performed despite associations with complications and prolonged hospital stay. We will collect views from staff, patients and families to assist in the development of a formal nurse-led risk assessment of fluid intake with a matching graded response protocol. Individual interviews with patients and families/carers, and group interviews with staff will be audio-recorded and transcribed for thematic analysis. After implementation of the resulting protocol in typical hospital settings as a service improvement, further interviews will examine protocol acceptability and attitudes towards formalising the process of provision of oral fluid support.
