Data collection arrangements
Since the first kidney transplant was performed in Belfast in 1968, information has been stored on the recipient's health, transplant details, complications from transplantation and long term kidney and patient survival. The age, gender and ethnicity of both kidney donor and recipient are also recorded. This is collected by the doctor in charge of kidney transplantation in Northern Ireland and two other doctors with an interest in transplantation. This data is stored in a secure database held only on hospital computers. Prior to any research, the data is anonymised by removing the hospital identification number.
Research programme
The Northern Ireland Kidney Transplant Database is unique in providing valuable information on the long term outcomes after a kidney transplant. There is no known database which provides an equivalent wealth of information. Long term kidney transplant failure is an increasingly common problem and is associated with illness and reduced survival for the transplant recipient. Using this database, research can be undertaken to identify factors which improve long term survival for these patients. This may translate into improved management and outcomes for kidney transplant recipients.
