Research summary
Ever since its introduction in the 1920s, studies identified that vaccination against tuberculosis with Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) had a number of non-specific beneficial effects, including providing protection against infant mortality independent of its impact on tuberculosis. Many studies have tried to understand the mechanisms which mediate this non-specific protection.
Our group have assessed immunity following vaccination against typhoid with Ty21a and have observed that it enhances immunity to other pathogens, not just Salmonella. We now intend to characterise this response over a 6 month time period and aim to identify the underlying mechanisms which facilitate this enhanced immune activity.
