Research summary
Dentally anxious patients are often managed using Sedation drugs to allow dental treatment to be carried out. However sedation is a short term option, and in order to manage anxiety on a long term basis non-pharmacological (psychological) techniques can be used for example Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).
The aim of the study is to explore the potential for using CBT in the care of dentally anxious patients at Newcastle Dental Hospital Sedation Department. A Questionnaire survey will be used to collect information about Dental Anxiety and Quality of Life. One to One Interviews will be carried out to seek patient views on long-term management options. Descriptive data will be analysed and presented and a report produced. This study has been developed for use within the Newcastle Dental Hospital Sedation Department and Newcastle Community Dental Service.
