  • Research summary

This project will involve a group of people coming together to give their views on a list of non-drug treatments for delirium, a common condition in intensive care units which can cause frightening hallucinations, nightmares, confusion and memory problems. The group will be provided with information on the group of non-drug treatments including exercising, improving sleep etc that have been found to be the most effective in managing delirium and asked their views on each. The meeting will be tape recorded with permission from participants and the researcher will look at the content to see if participants think that the treatments are practical and acceptable. The information and participant’s identities will be kept private and confidential. The information will be used to devise a bundle of the most effective treatments for the management of delirium in critically ill patients and also practical and acceptable to ICU staff and ICUsteps members in terms of workload and approval.

The aims of the focus group interviews are

    - To assess the practicality of a group of non-drug interventions
    - To assess the acceptability of non-drug interventions from the perspective of clinical staff and Intensive care unit (ICU) support group members
    - To identify any potential situations or things that might help the non-drug treatments work or stop the non-drug treatments from working in clinical practice

    Academic rationale:

The focus group interviews are an integral part of my PhD project and aim to retrieve information that will help to develop a group of non-pharmacological interventions.
