Research summary
The World Health Organisation guidelines for community noise which includes advice relating to hospitals suggest that noise levels should not exceed 35 decibels where patients are being treated or observed. Excessive noise has been associated with delirium and increased hospital stay which cause a significant burden on the healthcare system. This study aims determine the patterns of noise levels in one intensive care unit and identify the sources of noise. Through identifying noise contributors and implementing a reduction strategy the study intends to determine whether a reduction in noise improves patient/staff perception of noise in the intensive care unit and its impact on their well-being.
