Research summary
The National Neonatal Research Database (NNRD) contains routinely-collected daily clinical data on all newborn babies admitted to neonatal units for intensive care in England and Wales. It includes data from almost all neonatal units in England since 2010. The NNRD is used to answer audit questions decided by the National Neonatal Audit Programme (NNAP), by comparing individual neonatal units’ performance against a standard.
Four MSc/MSci students will review, compare and develop statistical methods to address the particular statistical challenges and opportunities that arise when attempting to answer clinical questions of interest using data from the NNRD. Broadly, the statistical questions are how best to model and present information about patterns of clinical outcomes in neonatal care, and how best to identify unusual performance in clinical outcomes at hospital level. The aim proposed is to improve statistical methods. No individuals or hospitals will be identifiable. The projects will be of three-six months' duration and each student will analyse anonymised data, on babies born before 33 weeks' gestation and admitted for neonatal care between 1st January 2010 and 31st December 2014, extracted from the NNRD, and write a thesis of 10-12,000 words.REC name
