Data collection arrangements
The Newcastle Mitochondrial Research Biobank (NMRB) is a collection of biological resources from patients with/suspected of having mitochondrial diseases, their family members and from control subjects. The overall aim of the Biobank is to support, underpin and drive research to improve the lives of patients with mitochondrial disease and their families.
A wide range of samples and tissue types are stored, including muscle, blood, urine, stool and DNA. These samples originate from numerous sources, primarily the Excess Diagnostic Archive of the Newcastle Highly Specialised Mitochondrial Diagnostic Laboratory (MDS Lab), but also existing holdings of material pre-dating 01 September 2006, material from completed research studies and clinical trials (where consent has been provided for use of samples in future research) and samples collected prospectively for the Biobank.
Samples are consented via NMRB specific-consent forms or via prior consent relating to existing holdings.
Research programme
Samples donated to NMRB are an extremely valuable gift and it is NMRB policy that samples and data will only be provided for high quality research which contributes to the overall objective of the biobank, namely, to support, underpin and drive research to improve the lives of patients with mitochondrial disease and their families. Applications for use of samples will only be accepted from recognised academic and commercial researchers and research organisations based in the UK and overseas. This includes, but is not limited to, NHS and healthcare organisations, universities and pharmaceutical/biotechnology companies. Samples will be released primarily to applicants working in the field of mitochondrial disease, with the aim of facilitating understanding into the basic biology of mitochondria and how they function, determining the pathological role of mitochondria in human disease and ageing, and developing novel therapies for mitochondrial diseases. Applications from disease areas other than mitochondrial disease will be considered in exceptional circumstances, where there is a potential relevance or benefit to mitochondrial disease patients.
