  • Research summary

This project will explore the views, experiences and health and wellbeing outcomes of Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professions (NMAHP) staff working during the COVID-19 pandemic. We will recruit four groups of NMAHPs: i) staff working in their usual clinical areas and roles; ii) staff redeployed to clinical areas and/or roles unfamiliar to them; iii) retired staff returning to the workforce, and iv) new graduates entering the workforce early. Participants will keep a digital diary for a 6-month period. They will be encouraged to reflect on their experiences at weekly intervals, or more often if they wish. We will also gather information on health and wellbeing using standardised questionnaires at 2-monthly intervals. Finally, staff will be invited to take part in an in-depth 1-1 interview at the end of the diary-keeping period, to explore some of the issues raised in the diaries in more depth. The findings will include important knowledge about negative and positive experiences of working during a pandemic, which will be used to inform planning for future major incidents and emergencies. It will also be used to inform the development or enhancement of working practices and ways of supporting this vital workforce in NHS Grampian and Scotland-wide.
