Data collection arrangements
Hospitals will collect information about hospital patients who received a haemoglobin measurement. Information will include their demographics, medical history, investigations, and treatment, including any blood product transfusions.
Information will be anonymised to remove patient identifiable information, and then be transferred using a secure file transfer system to the lead centre. Once received the information will be brought together in a large secure database. Information from NHSBT which provides blood products to the NHS will also be added to this database to allow questions about the effect of different blood product transfusions on patients outcomes, such as complications and re-admission rates.
Researchers who have questions in the theme of blood management will submit their research proposal to the steering group, who will ensure it is of scientific value and aligned to the research priorities identified by our patient and public panel. They will then be given a secure link to access the data they require to answer their research questions from the database. A blood transfusion can be lifesaving when there is major blood loss due to trauma or during an operation and can improve quality in life in patients with anaemia. However, blood products are a costly and scarce resource that is reliant on donors. There are also potential side-effects of receiving a blood transfusion and minimising blood loss and treating anaemia to reduce the need for blood transfusions can improve patient outcomes. We secured NIHR funding for five years for a collaborative research unit, bringing members of the public and patients together with researchers and clinicians to improve transfusion and blood management care. Using data which is already routinely collected electronically from multiple hospitals we will create a database allowing researchers to examine how different treatments can benefit patients. Our overall aim is to ensure that donated blood is used appropriately and that patients receive the best possible care. This research will address important research priorities in patient blood management identified by both The World Health Organization and the James Lind Alliance supporting all patients requiring transfusion or blood management care.
