  • Data collection arrangements

Aortic valves will be collected from consented patients at the time of aortic valve replacement surgery, and instead of their disposal, they will be collected as part of the tissue bank. The procedure will not interfere with clinical care. Samples will be immediately processed and stored. Frozen samples will be stored in NIHR BHF Aortic Valve Biobank alarmed freezers, labelled with contact name and number and stored in rooms with coded access doors. Fixed embedded samples will be stored in locked storage in rooms with coded access doors.

All data will be entered and stored onto the secure web platform REDCap which has been approved for use in the NHS. The samples will be identified by a study ID which will link all clinical data to the tissue samples. No other site or individual will have access to the link between the study ID and the patient identifiable information.

  • Research programme

The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) and British Heart Foundation (BHF) Cardiovascular Partnership has brought together sites actively involved in aortic stenosis research, and personnel with an interest in clinical and pre-clinical translational research. Many of these sites can collect routinely explanted aortic valve tissue at the time of aortic valve replacement, but do not have the equipment or expertise to perform certain experiments. By contrast, many sites with the capability to undertake the experiments do not have sufficient access to this tissue. Therefore, the NIHR BHF Aortic Valve Biobank aims to bridge these gaps and connect NHS partners and leading academic researchers across the UK, to help identify a much-needed medical treatment for this condition.
