Research summary
This is an observational study with no treatment interventions and minimal impact on the time and routine of a specific patient group. A group of patients (no more than 20) who have a confirmed diagnosis of Niemann Pick type C, a rare neuro-metabolic disorder, will be asked to attend the gait analysis laboratory at the university of Salford on the same day as their routine clinical follow up at Salford Royal hospital. Their walking pattern and balance will be analysed using video capture and force plate equipment. Surface electromyography will be used to measure strength in specific lower limb muscle groups for each patient. The aim of the study is to establish if there are shared common traits in terms of walking and balance in this condition. Transport will be provided to take participants to/ from the university site.
