  • Data collection arrangements

The aim of the I3I RTB is to continue the collection, storage and supply a number of tissue types, which have been either prospectively or retrospectively collected, in order to facilitate and support medical research carried out by the Immunobiology section of the Institute of Infection, Immunity and Inflammation, University of Glasgow.

Where appropriate patients may be requested to donate additional blood and/or biopsy samples. The relevant Participant Information leaflets, Participant Consent Form and Privacy Notice for the collection of the additional tissue are included in this application.

    Additional tissue types requested include:
Whole blood plus derivatives (e.g. serum, plasma, buffy coat and other blood cell fractions)
    Urine
    Faeces
Synovial biopsy and excess synovial fluid.
    Skin biopsy
    Bowel/colon biopsy

Additional tissue collected may be used directly in research projects or banked for future use:
    1) Fresh tissue may be used immediately for current research projects or banked for future use.
    2) Fresh tissue may be aliquoted and frozen at -20C and -80C, or ultra-low temperature (liquid nitrogen) for use in future research studies.
    3) Solid tissue may be formalin fixed and stored as a formalin fixed paraffin block (FFPB), for subsequent tissue sectioning and mounting on glass slides for future research using immunohistology techniques.
    4) Tissue micro arrays (TMAs) may also be constructed from the FFP block tissue resources.
    5) Blood and tissue derivatives may be processed to extract DNA, RNA or protein extractions which may be used immediately or stored for future research. The participant information sheet outlines that DNA/RNA may be extracted from the samples and used in research and consent is sought to do so.

  • Research programme

The main purpose of the tissue resource is to support the established and growing basic and translational research programme at the Institute of Infection, Immunity and Inflammation, an internationally recognised research organisation, whose specific interest is to better understand the immunological and pathogenetic pathways in a wide range of conditions organised under the umbrella of rheumatic and musculoskeletal disease (RMD), which includes over 200 conditions and includes a wide range of degenerative and inflammatory conditions, infection related arthritis, gout, tendon disease, and vasculitis. Furthermore, the Institute also research other infectious and inflammatory mediated conditions and has an active and growing research programme which specifically investigates the pathogenesis and immune dysregulation of tendon disease; inflammatory conditions of the lung, skin, gastrointestinal tract, kidney and liver. We are currenting expanding our research programme to include the relationship between central and peripheral chronic pain conditions and the peripheral inflammation associated with chronic rheumatic diseases.
