Research summary
Next Steps is one of Britain’s world-renowned national longitudinal cohort studies. It attempts to follow people educated in England, recruited at age 13-14 and born in years 1989-90, charting the effects of events and circumstances in education on outcomes and achievements later on.
Since 2004, when study members were first recruited, there have been seven attempts to gather information from the cohort. Over time, the scope of the inquiry has broadened from a strict education and economic activity focus for ages 13-20, to encompass measures: household, physical and mental health, attitudes, social and political action at age 25.
The study is carried out by the Centre for Longitudinal Studies (CLS), University College London (UCL).
This application relates to the next sweep of the study which will take place from autumn 2021-2023 when study members will be age around age 32. Data collection will be carried out by Ipsos MORI, an independent survey research organisation.
The survey will be a sequential mixed methods design. All study members will be initially invited to take part online. After a month, those who have not taken part but have not withdrawn from the study will be invited to a face-to-face interview and then given a final opportunity to take part via telephone. The sweep will involve:
1) completion of a questionnaire online, in-person, or over the phone
2) a cognitive assessment
3) collection of a saliva sample
4) the collection of consents to link survey data with data held in administrative records. The study is core-funded by the Economic and Social Research Council.
