Research summary
Many people recovering from early breast cancer are living with overweight, which can negatively impact overall health and quality of life. Excess weight also increases the risk of cancer recurrence, which may impact long-term survival. Supporting individuals to adopt healthy lifestyle behaviours that help them to manage their weight is therefore important. However, there is a lack of ongoing lifestyle supported offered to individuals after the initial treatment.
To address this, we worked with women with overweight after surgical treatment for breast cancer and healthcare professionals to co-design a lifestyle support programme. The programme aims to educate and empower people treated for early breast cancer to manage their weight by increasing their physical activity and improving their diet
The support programme, has been tested in a previous small study which found that women who received the support programme lost more weight than those receiving standard care. We now aim to conduct a larger study with 375 people living with overweight and recovering from early-stage breast cancer to test how effective the support programme is, in comparison with standard care.
Participants will receive either the support programme or usual care for 12 months. All participants will attend face-to-face or virtual assessment sessions at the start of the study and at 6,12 and 18 months. A member of the research team will collect physical measurements (e.g. weight, waist & hip circumference and blood pressure) and questionnaires to measure quality of life and cancer specific symptoms and fears. The support programme will be delivered to small groups of participants by trained lifestyle advisors and dietitians either remotely (e.g., via Teams or Zoom) or in person at a community facility.
