  • Data collection arrangements

Biobank samples are only collected when clinical samples are being taken. In addition, we collect material which has been used for its clinical purpose and will either be discarded or archived, such as urine or tissue taken during biopsy.

To fully use the samples collected we need clinical data. This clinical data is only ever gathered after a participant has agreed to take part in the Biobank and only information relevant to the transplant is collected transplant. Identifiable information is only seen by Biobank team members. Data and samples released to researchers are identified by an anonymised number. Clinical data is stored on the secure Trust computer system.

Clinical teams identify patients eligible for the Biobank. These patients are given the patient information sheet by a member of the Biobank team. Time is allowed to read the information sheet, ask questions and consider participation. Written consent is taken by the Biobank team if a patient is happy to participate.
If samples come from untransplantable donor organs, we request a copy of the organ donor consent form. All consent forms are stored in a secure location within the Trust.

  • Research programme

The Institute of Transplantation at the Freeman Hospital is the only centre in the UK where all types of solid organ are transplanted. Newcastle University at the Institute of Transplantation has recently been opened a research centre to increase the numbers of and improve donor organs we use. The Institute of Transplantation Tissue Biobank is central to this, providing researchers with the ability to collect and store samples for current and future research. Samples from the Biobank are made available to university and industry scientists studying transplantation throughout the UK and worldwide. It is important to state if samples are issued to a commercial company this is done in a cost-recovery model and not to generate a profit. Samples are used for studies to better understand how a patient gets to the stage of needing a transplant and how their body reacts to the transplant. At the moment, most transplant fail before the natural life span of a patient. Why this happens and how we could stop this from happening is a key research goal. A better understanding will improve diagnosis of future patients and also plan better treatments for pre and post-transplant patients.
