Data collection arrangements
We aim for the database to be a centralised repository for information on patients who are part of the epilepsy surgery program at Newcastle. The database will contain a summary of information found in their hospital notes, including basic patient demographics and results of laboratory, imaging and neurophysiological investigations, through to surgical interventions and outcomes. Data will be collected by members of the epilepsy surgery team during routine clinic visits and following investigations, and passed onto the data controller for input into the database.
Research programme
The data will be used to audit the routine clinical care of patients entering the epilepsy surgery program, as well as a tool for identifying patterns within the clinical information and investigations which potentially lead to improved surgical outcomes. It will also be used to support research within the university aimed at improving our understanding of epilepsy and developing new methods for the clinical investigation of epilepsy. More recently it will be used to support research as part of the CANDO (Controlling Abnormal Network Dynamics with Optogenetics) project, which aims to develop a novel brain implant to control focal epilepsy using light.
