Research summary
We know that damage of heart muscle cells releases markers into the blood stream. This can currently be detected by measuring Troponin which has revolutionised the diagnosis of myocardial infarction, i.e. a heart attack. This test has developed difficulties since it is now able to detect much smaller amounts of injury. Frequently patients who have other conditions such as chronic kidney disease and heart failure have a chronic elevation of Troponin in the blood, meaning that fewer people can have a heart attack excluded simply on the basis of a blood test. Our purpose is to discover new markers without this deficiency.
