  • Research summary

The aim of this project is to explore the feasibility of a study looking at whether children who have had a bleed between the skull and the protective layer surrounding the brain (dura mater) due to trauma, called an extradural haematoma (EH), are having difficulties with their thinking, behaviour or social skills. This is a study comparing a group of individuals with a history of paediatric EH with a group who have experienced orthopaedic injuries not involving a brain injury e.g. broken limbs (an orthopaedic control group). The purpose of this comparison is to rule out factors that may be common to both groups and explain any difficulties found, such as trauma. The feasibility study will compare the two groups across outcomes from cognitive, behavioural and social assessments. This will provide important information to inform the design of a large-scale research study. To the research teams’ knowledge, there is currently no existing literature on the cognitive, behavioural and social outcomes after paediatric EH. This study aims to address some of the limitations of the research found on mild traumatic brain injury in children by clearly explaining the recruitment process, using valid psychological measures and an orthopaedic control group. There is currently no psychological or neuropsychological service provided to children with EH at Noah’s Ark Hospital. The data generated from research on this population could provide the basis for clinicians, in collaboration with service users, to make a case for service development.
