Research summary
Recently compounds have been developed for use with Positron Emission Tomography to evaluate in vivo tau pathology. This pathology can be variable but is a feature common to several brain illnesses. The specificity of binding of these compounds for sub-types of tau pathology and for tau pathology over other common pathological protein aggregates has yet to be validated. We propose to use existing brain tissue samples from the Cambridge brain bank to examine the binding of this compound across a range of brain illnesses and their associated pathologies. We will also quantify cell loss, other markers of neuropathology and evaluate new radio-ligands that may be used in in vivo studies. Techniques used would include microscopy, stereometry, histochemistry and ligand binding studies.
