  • Research summary

Being active and taking exercise is an important part of the recovery process after having a fracture (broken bone). Unfortunately, many people are unable to be active or take exercise immediately after having a fracture. This can delay their recovery.
This is a study of electrical stimulation of the leg muscles whilst people with a fracture are not able to be active or do enough exercise. The treatment is called Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation. The aim is that this will keep muscles moving, prevent them from wasting away, and help the recovery process. Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation is safe and has been used to increase muscle strength in other diseases and in athletes. In this study, we want to find out if it increases the muscle strength of people who have had a fracture. In this study we only want to give the treatment to one of your legs. This study is called a “feasibility study”.
There is a further purpose of this study. People need to eat enough protein to build and maintain muscle strength. We do not yet know whether people recovering from a fracture eat enough protein or might benefit from an increase in the amount of protein in their diet. In this feasibility study we will offer protein supplements to some people, to see if this increases the effect of Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation. This will help us to decide whether future studies need to combine electric stimulation with a protein supplement or not.
