Research summary
Faecal incontinence (FI) affects a large number of people of varying ages and poses a major health care burden for the NHS. The condition is often devastating for the sufferer, with loss of bowel control causing embarrassment, social isolation and an overall reduction in quality of life. A critical barrier to progress in the treatment of FI is the lack of understanding of how treatments affect the core physiological mechanisms. We aim to test our hypothesis that neuromodulation therapy using lumbo-sacral magnetic stimulation, a safe non invasive technique for stimulating nerves, will improve symptoms in FI patients. In addition we will determine the optimum frequency of stimulation and improve our understanding of the nerve pathways involved in this disorder.
