  • Research summary

The aim of the study is to compare two treatments for irreparable injury to the shoulder rotator cuff tendons to establish which produces the best clinical results. One treatment involves shaving away abnormal bone and soft tissue inside the shoulder to reduce pain, this is a subacromial decompression which is the current standard treatment. The second treatment is to perform standard treatment plus the addition of a nerve decompression to further reduce pain.

All patients with surgically irreparable rotator cuff injury with no prior shoulder surgery will be eligible. They must have had symptoms for at least 12 weeks and failed non surgical treatment. The study will be carried out at Arrowe Park Hospital and Clatterbridge Hospital. Participants will be followed up at 6 weeks, 12 weeks, 6 months, 12 months and 2 years post operatively. Pre operatively and at each follow up appointment patients will complete questionnaires and undergo a clinical assessment.
