  • Research summary

Phase 2 of the NEON Study consists of four research activities. Protocols: [NEON Phase 2. Collected protocols. V1.0. 31.3.18].

    NORSE (Narratives of Recovery Scale)

We will evaluate NORSE, a scale designed to characterise mental health recovery stories. Four participants will rate a set of recovery stories using NORSE, and ratings will be analysed to collect evidence for reliability of the scale.

    Narrative Impact

We will collect evidence for the impact of mental health recovery stories on mental health services users. Fourty service users will be provided with access to ten recovery stories, and will be asked questions to determine the impact of the story on them.

    Clinical Focus Groups

We will recruit healthcare professionals to focus groups, designed to generate knowledge intended to inform the design of a future clinical intervention built around mental health recovery stories. Focus groups will be conducted with healthcare professionals, who will be asked to consider facilitators, harms and barriers to the use of the intervention in practice, and to critique an early version of the intervention.

    Feasibility study
We will collect evidence for the feasibility of using an on-line tool to delivery mental health recovery narratives to mental health services users. Thirty service users will be provided with access to a prototype of an on-line tool. They will test it with a researcher, self-guided usage of the tool over one month will be monitored, and a debriefing interview will be conducted.

These research activities are underpinned by work to assemble a collection of mental health recovery stories (the NEON Collection).

The work of assembling the NEON Collection is not a research activity, and hence is outside of the scope of some questions in this IRAS form. The principles of how the NEON Collection will be managed are described in section 7 of [NEON Phase 2. Collected protocols. V1.0. 31.3.18].
