Research summary
The colonisation assessment phase is comprised of three activities: a colonisation assessment, survey of infection prevention and control (IPC) infrastructure and antimicrobial use in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) in Europe.
The colonisation assessment aims to study the feasibility of assessing resistant bacterial colonisation pressure and modelling infant colonisation dynamics by using anonymous data and samples from repeated cross-sectional assessments. Only non-invasive samples (e.g. skin swabs and stool) that would typically be used as part of surveillance and quality management in NICUs will be collected. These samples will be subjected to pooled genomic analyses using genetic (artificial) tags corresponding to anonymised participant ID numbers to establish colonisation pressure for clinically important resistant bacteria in a range of European neonatal intensive care units (NICUs).REC name
